So we just wrapped up our first week of living on $120 a week and, I have to say, I’m very proud of us! We managed to stay comfortably under our allowance, with a little extra to spend next week (even though we did dip into savings twice).
But, I have a perfectly valid reason, I swear!
The expenses for last week break down as follows:
- Starting Total – $120
- Gas – $27.13
- BJ’s Wholesale – $22.91
- Grocery Shopping – $31.53
- Total Spent – $81.57
- Total Remaining – $38.43
- Starting Total Next Week – $158.43
I have to say, none of us felt like we skimped at all. No, we didn’t eat out at all last week, but we did enjoy some awesome home cooked meals:
- Friday – I honestly don’t remember
- Saturday – Spaghetti
- Sunday – Pork and potatoes
- Monday – Schnitzel and noodles
- Tuesday – Slow cooked pork loin with leftover noodles
- Wednesday – Pizza
- Thursday – Leftovers
While we did use some ingredients we had on-hand to bulk up our meals (frozen and canned vegetables, flour, butter), almost everything we ate we bought this week.
Our breakfasts weren’t too shabby either… Lots of egg taco wraps and some leftover cereal. We didn’t eat out at all last week, though we did splurge on frozen pizza for our weekly pizza night (it was cheaper than our local pizza place) and some chips and salsa for movie night at home.
Next week, I’ll break down exactly what we spent and where… I lost the receipts this week because… Well, I don’t usually keep my receipts..
As far as savings goes, we made two deposits for a total of $117.71.
We did have three expenses we took out of savings:
- Home Depot – $47.76
- Black Moon Games – $42.50
- Local School – $22.00
- Total – 112.26
- Net – +$5.45
The first expense was for cheap pellets and couldn’t be helped… Technically, it’s a bill so it’s not supposed to come out of our weekly spending. Since we didn’t have that much of a bills buffer in our account, we had to take it from savings. This is totally on point for how our budget works.
The second expense was a budgeted expense from savings to pay for Easter gifts for the kids. Again, our budget allows for a $50 withdrawl from savings for minor holidays so, again, this worked exactly as it should.
The third was a fundraiser I paid for weeks ago that I totally forgot. Do people really wait this long to cash their checks? Next time, we’ll pay for this out of our weekly allowance.
For this week, with Easter around the corner, I see us spending:
- $20 on Easter Baskets
- $30 for gas
- $50 on food
That’s a $20 surplus that we’d bring to the next week, giving us a new balance on week three of $178.43!
Can we do it? We shall see!
Until next week,
